You've Bred Your Dog Now What?!?

SCHEDULE AN ULTRASOUND

30 days after your first appointment with us please schedule an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. This can be done through your vet, or at any reproduction clinic.

SWITCH TO PUPPY FOOD

Upon confirmation of pregnancy it is time to put your female on a high quality puppy food. We have shared a few that we love to use and that we personally use with our pregnant and nursing mothers. We love using Amazon Subscribe and Save and find it makes our life a lot easier to just have it delivered on a schedule!

LIMIT STRESS

Puppy absorption can occur any time before 44 days. After that, the puppy’s bones are too hard to be broken down and cannot be absorbed. There are many factors that can contribute to this, one of which is Environmental stress. You know your dog so during this time it is best to pay attention and limit stressful situations and environments as much as possible.

SCHEDULE X-RAY

Around day 52 (after the first breeding) you can take your female in for a pregnancy x-ray. This is not required but recommended for the safety of your dog. This allows you to get an exact count of how many puppies there are so when it’s time for delivery you can monitor the process and ensure all puppies arrive safely.

CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS

CONSULT WITH YOUR VET BEFORE STARTING CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS. We personally give our females calcium based off of recommended dosing on the bottle starting at day 55 and continue it until they are done nursing. There are many benefits to this, one of which is to help your female keep up a good milk supply. Once labor begins we give our dogs a dose of their calcium, and at about half way through delivery we give another dose. Here are some a few of our personal favorites.
